Richmond, VA — Dr. Danny Avula, Mayor-elect of the City of Richmond, welcomes Richmonders to join him on January 11 for his Inauguration Celebration, “A Day of Service: Moving Richmond Forward Together”.
- The day kicks off at 9 a.m. with a ceremonial swearing-in at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School.
- Public service projects follow, from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m., a partnership between Danny’s Inaugural Committee and the City of Richmond.
- A ticketed Inaugural Celebration at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts will close out the day’s festivities.
“I’m thrilled to host my ceremonial swearing-in at MLK Middle School. Thanks to RPS for allowing us to gather in the neighborhood I’ve called home for two decades. I can’t wait to see all my family, friends, and neighbors pack out the auditorium!”, said Danny. The swearing-in ceremony will feature performances by Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School cheer squad, as well as Richmond’s poet laureate, Joanna Lee. The swearing-in ceremony is free and open to the public, although registration is required in advance for security and capacity reasons: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/20240111swearingin
Following the swearing-in, Danny’s Inaugural Committee and the City of Richmond will host service projects across the city in all nine Council Districts. These projects will help restore and protect urban green spaces, support children and families, and address facilities needs in several schools.
“We’ve worked with several different departments and offices at City Hall, with Richmond Public Schools, City Council, the Community Foundation, and with nonprofits and community groups all across the city to put together a really meaningful list of opportunities for folks to serve the community. It’s been a wonderful experience working with the City’s staff on organizing these service projects.”, said Jonathan Chan, Operations Director for the Inaugural Committee. Residents are encouraged to sign up for the service projects online: https://www.cfengage.org/inaugural.
The day comes to an end with a ticketed celebration hosted by Danny’s Inauguration Committee at the VMFA from 7:30 – 10:00 p.m. Tim Kaine, Anne Holton, Jennifer McClellan, and Dave Mills will serve as co-chairs, and guests can expect an evening of food, drink, music, fun — plus a special surprise or two! Musical guests will include Richmond’s very own No BS! Brass Band, as well as a jazz combo from VCUArts Music. Attire is semi-formal.
